ANDOVER ANALYTICS

If you've got an iPhone 15 in a drawer or you're about to upgrade, here's what it's actually worth. These are real prices from the marketplaces and buyback companies we track every day, not a trade-in estimate designed to get you to buy something.

Quick answer

In Good condition and unlocked, base storage:

  • iPhone 15 (128GB): about $400 on the used market, $334 listed on Swappa, $271 from the best buyback offer
  • iPhone 15 Plus (128GB): about $425, $376 on Swappa, $384 best buyback offer
  • iPhone 15 Pro (128GB): about $495, $438 on Swappa, $344 best buyback offer
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max (256GB): about $617, $500 on Swappa, $463 best buyback offer

Those are three different numbers on purpose, and the difference between them is worth understanding before you sell.

Why there are three prices

The used market price is the median across everywhere we track: Swappa, Back Market, eBay, Gazelle's store, Reebelo and Plug.Tech. A lot of those are refurbishers selling with a warranty, so they charge more. This is roughly what a buyer pays for your phone, not what you get.

The Swappa price is what people like you are listing the same phone for on Swappa. If you're selling it yourself, this is the most useful number. Keep in mind Swappa takes about 6.5% between their fee and PayPal, so a $438 sale puts about $395 in your pocket.

The best buyback offer is the highest guaranteed offer we found from Gazelle, Rick's iStock and more than a dozen other buyback companies. No listing, no waiting, but usually less money.

iPhone 15 prices by storage

All prices are Good condition, unlocked.

StorageUsed marketSwappa listingBest buyback offer
128GB$398$334$271
256GB$437$361$314
512GB$514$491$354

iPhone 15 Plus prices by storage

StorageUsed marketSwappa listingBest buyback offer
128GB$425$376$384
256GB$474$387$400
512GB$535$526$471

The 15 Plus is the one weird spot in this lineup. The best buyback offer is actually higher than the typical Swappa listing at 128GB and 256GB. If you have a 15 Plus, get a buyback quote before you bother listing it.

iPhone 15 Pro prices by storage

StorageUsed marketSwappa listingBest buyback offer
128GB$495$438$344
256GB$554$449$376
512GB$585$494$406

256GB$617$500$463
512GB$628$541$503
1TB$662$567$540

Notice how little extra the bigger storage sizes bring on the Pro Max. Going from 256GB to 1TB adds about $45 on the used market. Apple charged $400 more for that upgrade. Used buyers just don't pay for storage the way new buyers do.

How condition changes the price

The tables above are all Good condition. Here's roughly how the other grades compare:

  • Mint (looks basically new) sells for about 3% to 10% more than Good on the marketplaces. At buyback companies it can be 15% to 30% more.
  • Fair (visible scratches or dings, works fine) sells for only about 5% less than Good on the marketplaces. Buyback companies are much harsher, often 15% to 40% less.

So if your iPhone 15 is beat up, sell it yourself. If it's flawless, a buyback offer gets a lot more competitive. I wrote a whole post on this: Mint vs Good vs Fair.

Is now a good time to sell?

For the iPhone 15 specifically, it doesn't really matter. Prices have been flat for six months.

The base iPhone 15 at 128GB has been between about $385 and $415 the whole time. That's normal for a phone that's three years old. The steep part of the drop already happened.

The iPhone 16 is a different story. It's come down from about $574 in late June to about $535 now, and newer phones keep sliding like that until they're around three years old. If you're sitting on a 16, sooner is better. If it's a 15, sell it whenever it's convenient.

Things that knock the price down

  • Battery health below 80%. Buyers check it. Plenty of them filter it out completely.
  • A cracked screen or back. That moves it out of Fair and into a broken or damaged category, which is a different, much lower price.
  • Activation lock. If it's still signed into iCloud, nobody can use it. Sign out and erase it before you sell.
  • A carrier lock. Marketplaces barely care, but buyback companies can pay a lot less. See locked vs unlocked prices.
  • An unpaid balance or a blacklisted IMEI. Swappa won't let you list it, and most buyback companies won't take it.

Common questions

How much is a used iPhone 15 worth?

About $400 in Good condition, unlocked, with 128GB, based on the median across the major used marketplaces. You'll typically list it for around $334 on Swappa or get about $271 from the best buyback company.

How much is an iPhone 15 Pro Max worth used?

About $617 for the 256GB model in Good condition, unlocked. The best buyback offer is around $463, and it typically lists for about $500 on Swappa.

Is it better to sell an iPhone 15 or trade it in?

For most iPhone 15 models, selling it yourself gets you more. Across every phone we track, the best buyback offer pays about 69% as much as selling on Swappa after fees. The 15 Plus is the exception right now. More in Trade-in vs selling yourself.

Will the iPhone 15 lose more value soon?

Probably not much. Three year old iPhones have held their prices pretty steady over the last six months. Most of the drop happens in the first two years.
